2012 Mini Countryman Racked Out

13 03 2013

This Mini is set up to carry anything you may need.  We started with a Thule Aeroblade system composed of the 460R Rapid Podium Towers, Fitkit 4020 and a pair of 47″ Aeroblade load bars.  This system attaches to the factory installed flush mounted siderails.  Using the Aeroblade bars we are getting the highest weight capacity and the most aerodynamic option.

Mini Aeroblade Basket (2)

To this base we added a couple of Rocky Mount Euro Pitchforks to carry the bikes.  The Euro Pitchfork mounts flush to the Aeroblade load bars and come in a whole rainbow of colors to match your ride.  The low profile design of this bike rack accommodates any style of bike you have.  If you have Thru-Axles on your fork, Rocky Mounts has you covered with the Driveshaft fork adapter.  Between the bike carriers we added the Yakima LoadWarrior to handle all the other gear you have to take along.  The LoadWarrior also has a ton of accessory options to add to it as well.  You can add the LoadWarrior Extension which will give you 18″ more space, cargo nets to hold everything down.  If you need to attach your Axe, Shovel, Hi-Lift Jack or Spare Tire there are also brackets for that.  Lights and locks are also another great add-on to the basket.

2008 Ford F150 FX4 Crewcab Bed Rack

1 02 2012

This 2008 Ford F150 Crew Cab is outfitted with a custom Yakima Track System and LoadWarrior Cargo Basket.

This system is installed using  track(201135) mounted to each of the bed rails.  From here we add 2 pair of Landing Pad #1s, a set of Yakima Control towers, and a pair of 66″ Yakima Round load bars.  Using this system will give you a completly adjustable, strong system to carry anything you want while leaving your bed open for storage.  The Control Tower/Landing pad combination does have a quick release feature to pull the bars  and any accessories off the vehicle in a matter of minutes when unlocked.

On this particular truck we added a Yakima LoadWarrior basket which will handle any gear you can throw in it.  The LoadWarrior also has a variety of accessories you can add on, from Axe/Shovel brackets and  Hi-Lift Jack mounts, to Spare Tire carriers and Light Mounts.  Any standard Yakima roofrack accessories will also mount onto this as well as many Thule and Inno products.

VW GTI Custom Thule Roof Rack

12 02 2011

This 2008 Volkswagen GTI 3-door is outfitted with a custom track system using Thule components.  We started by attaching  a Thule 54″ Track running front to back on the roof, we went as far to the sides as possible to make for a stonger system.

After installing the track on the roof, we inserted the TK1 Tracker Footpack.  This will be the base in which  tower will install to.  We adjusted the TK1 to provide us with a 31″ bar spread to accomodate skis and snowboards.  We also centered them in the track to make for level bars.  After the TK1 is tightened we proceeded to attach the 430 Tracker II towers to a pair of LB50 50″ Thule load bars and mount on the previously installed TK1s.

Next we added the 91726 Universal Pull Top ski carrier to accomadate 6 pair of skis or 4 snowboards.  For the final step we added the 544 4-pack of  Thule lock cores to make the whole system secure.

The finished product is a very stong and versatile system to carry any load you need to.  The tracks will provide a higher weight limit as well as allowing to adjust your bars front to back for various accessories and loads.   This will also allow for  bike carriers, cargo boxes, and boat carriers.

2011 Nissan Juke Custom Yakima Rack

8 02 2011

This 2011 Nissan Juke is outfitted with a custom roof rack using components from Yakima.

We started by determining placement of the rack on the roof of this vehicle.  This will allow for the maximum usability of the rack, as well as making for the most aesthically pleasing rack.  Once the placement was determined, the owner was looking to carry snowboards, we attached 2 pair of  Yakima Landing Pad 7.

After the Landing Pads are attached we will proceed to mount the remainder of the rack.  This will consist of Yakima Control Towers, 48″ Yakima Load Bars, a Yakima 38″ Fairing, and finally a 4-Pack of Yakima SKS lock cores

The Control Tower/Landing Pad system has many great features, this rack is quickly removable when not in use and a very sturdy option to add more space and storage to the Nissan Juke.  This Yakima system will allow for any of Yakima’s accesories to attach; from bike carriers and cargo boxes to ski carriers and boat racks.

Custom Rack Install, Thule or Yakima

Custom Roof Rack

Custom Track Roof Rack, bars can slide

Here are a couple of examples of  custom roof racks with some permanently mounted parts. These racks can be found at rackattack.com by clicking base racks and then permanent base racks after choosing your brand preference (Thule or Yakima).

Custom rack, permanent position

Custom rack, permanent position

These racks are attached by drilling holes in the roof of either your sheet metal roof or fiberglass (topper). A track can be installed by being bolted through the drilled holes(picture 1). Another option (picture 2) is to go without the track and permanently mount small base pieces for the racks cross bars to attach onto.
With the track style rack you can mount the tracks to either surface, sheet metal (requires plusnuts/flarenut hardware) or fiberglass (requires bolt through hardware). The tracks are also available in a variety of lengths so you can choose the best fit after measuring the length of your roof.
With tracks, keeping them parallel when possible will make bar adjustments easier. Keeping permanently mounted parts more near the outsides of the roof would usually be a stronger position. Always make sure you have proper placement from inside the topper as well on fiberglass installs.
With Landing Pads from Yakima or TK’s from Thule (permanent position) always do your best to keep bars as level as possible with around a 30″ barspread if possible. Cross bar position considerations are, keep in mind hatches on vehicles whick open up may be constricted if the bars are too far back on the roof.  Your tower widths matching up will make it possible for either of the bars to trade places when re-attaching them. As opposed to the front bar only fits the front position. When drilling it is recommended that you use a stopper on the drill bit to keep you from drilling deeper than 3/4″. This will keep you from drilling into your headliner. once and a while when drilling a sheet metal roof you will encounter a brace just below the sheet metal after drilling through. You usually need to drill through the brace as well, keeping in mind to still not drill deeper than 3/4″. Sometimes the brace can be pushed aside instead. Flush holes after drilling will always make for a cleaner looking install.
